Book Review: The Fault In Our Stars

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

Type: Fiction
Length: 313 Pages
Reading Level: Intermediate/Easy
Rank: 4/5

This book is written by the best selling author John Green. This book is an extremely well known novel and has a movie coming out in June. John  Green holds nothing back in this book and today I'm going to share with you my thoughts about it.

First thing's first, I thought this novel would be a fast, easy read. And in a way it was just that. I finished this book in one day, on one car ride, while I was in Peru. It was an easy read because there weren't a lot of difficult words or descriptive paragraphs that just tend to drag on sometimes. But understand it when I say this book is not a light read. It will have you in tears, unless you are heartless. It will break your heart in a way that only a book can.

The main characters in this book, Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters are very, very lovable. The book is written from Hazel's point of view. She is sixteen. Also (here's the kicker) she has cancer. It's terminal. Immediately after reading that I said to myself' "Why am I reading this? I know it's going to be sad. I KNOW THE ENDING CAN'T BE GOOD I JUST KNOW IT!" But I read the damn book anyway.

Hazel goes to support group with other diagnosed teens once a week, and only because her mother makes her. Hazel hates support group and she hates the leader who always sings about God and being in the heart of Jesus. Also, I forgot to mention that Hazel's cancer forces her to have to travel with an oxygen tank at all times. So that's inconvenient and awesomely inhibiting for a teenager.

On this particular night Hazel is forced to go to support group, there's someone new. A hottie hot hottie, to Hazel anyway. They catch eyes at support group. So high school. The leader asks Augustus to share his story and if he has any fears he wants to tell the group, and he says that he is in remission, though the cancer took one of his legs and he only fears one thing: Oblivion. Hazel finds this funny and she tells him it's inevitable.

After support group Augustus talks to Hazel directly. He tells her she looks like Natalie Portman from V for Vendetta (Hazel's hair is short... you know, cancer.). Hazel hasn't seen that movie so he invited her over to watch it. But before she says yes he puts a cigarette in his mouth which seriously upsets Hazel. Like, obviously she has to breathe freaking oxygen through a tube since her lungs don't work. Wasting perfectly good lungs is ridiculous. Augustus laughs at her anger and says he's never lit one, (which is confusing right?) but rather that he treats it like a metaphor. "You put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to kill you."

Hazel decides she likes this and goes to his house to watch the movie. They talk about their cancers and their lives. Then they talk about books. Hazel is seriously obsessed with this book, An Imperial Affliction so she tells Augustus to read it and not call her until he finishes it. And he gives his favorite book in return, The Price Of Dawn.

If this isn't enough of the story to get you intrigued, then nothing about it will. This book review is going to be different than my others because I don't want to summarize the plot for you. I want you to go read it yourself. It's such a fast read, there's no excuse not to! Plus obvious spoilers that I want you as the reader to come to yourself. Not via my blog. Not via any YouTube comment or social media. READ IT. Then go see the movie and tell me all about your feelings. By the way, if you watch the trailer for the movie DON'T READ THE COMMENTS. I REPEAT: DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS!! It will all be spoiled. To save you the trouble, here's the preview. I cry every time, but then again I know what's going to happen.

Doesn't it just warm your little heart? And yes, that is Tris and Caleb from Divergent. But you get over that eventually.

Anyway, back to the book. There are things the kids would say that I would read and be like.... why did you say that what does that even mean? But that's what's perfect about it. They are teenagers and not everything they say makes any sense!

This book is so beautiful because it's real. These things feel real. The author makes you feel for these characters. These events could really take place. To finish off this review, I'm going to share with you some of my favorite quotes/moments from the book. The parts I can't wait to see in the film.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It truly was a great read. It made me laugh, it made me smile, and it made me cry. If that isn't the recipe for a great read then I don't know what is. Please, please read this book if you can get your hands on it. It is worth every penny you may spend.

Thanks for reading.

Book Review: Divergent Series & Bonus Movie Thoughts

Divergent by Veronica Roth
Type: Fiction
Length: Varies ~ 500 pages (varies)
Rank: 4.5/5

This post has been in my drafts section for quite some time. I've sat here a thousand times with the intentions of writing the review for this seriously amazing novel (and it's seriously amazing sister novels). However, each time that I begin to write them I just can't bring myself to type anything.

And do you know why?

Because as soon as I sit down here and type my thoughts on this, it's over. I can no longer hold on to some scrap of belief that it didn't really end or that I never actually finished it. I can no longer hope for some alternative ending or another book filled with explanations and happiness.

Nope, guys, today is the day. It's officially over for me.

A Synopsis of the Story:

This story takes place in future, dystopian, and destroyed Chicago. The society here is broken into five factions: Abnegation, the selfless. Amity, the kind. Erudite, the intelligetn. Candor, the honest. And Dauntless, the brave. On a set day each year, sixteen year olds will be given an aptitude test that will tell them their future and what faction they truly belong in. After the test, they make the decision to either stay with their families, or leave for a new faction. But they can never return if they choose to leave. Faction before blood.

A (brief) Plot Summary:

Beatrice Prior, our protagonist is born into the faction of her parents, Abnegation, the selfless. She lives in a simple home with her parents and her brother, Caleb. Beatrice has always known that she was not selfless enough to be an Abnegation. She thinks her brother Caleb has a much easier time with it.  She has always felt a little out of place among her own faction.

In order to help the sixteen-year-olds with the choosing of a faction that would be a good fit, there is an aptitude test. This test isn't delivered like your traditional ACT/SAT, but rather is a simulation that is injected into the neck or arm of the person taking the test. The serum injected takes over the senses of the individual and gives them a series of choices, so to speak, where the individual must choose based upon what they feel is right. Based upon their choices, they are given the corresponding faction that would suit them. This test is just an idea though and the individuals do not have to follow what is suggested to them.

On the day of the aptitude test, Beatrice's results are inconclusive. They call this Divergent. Being Divergent is dangerous because it means the individual cannot be controlled. If you are Divergent, you are to hide it as best as you can.

Beatrice already knew that she was different. She already knew that she was not Abnegation. So, on choosing day, it is only fitting that she chose not to stay Abnegation. Instead, Beatrice chooses Dauntless and her brother Caleb, chooses Erudite. She then sheds her Abnegation born name and goes by Tris. When she is brought to the Dauntless compound it is explained to her and her fellow initiates that only ten of them will become Dauntless. The rest will become Factionless- similar to homeless. They will have to compete with each other to rank in the top ten. Immediately, Tris befriends three other initiates named Christina, Will, and Al. She also makes an enemy of a boy named Peter.

The initiates are given an instructor who goes by the name of Four. He explains to them that initiation into Dauntless is broken up into three stages; physical, mental, and emotional. Tris is small, so physically she is outmatched by many of the initiates. However, she finishes in sixth for the week by taking down Molly - a large girl with a lot of muscle. After the first week, Peter, a fellow initiate finishes second to Edward. In retaliation, Peter stabs Edward's eye with a butter knife. This is enough to cause Edward and his girlfriend to leave and choose to be Factionless over Dauntless. Also during this time the Erudite faction releases a not so nice report against the Abnegation and attacks the Abnegation leader, Marcus, for being cruel. The report alleges that Marcus' cruelness caused his son Tobias to flee to another faction to escape him. The report also speculates the same about Tris, Caleb, and her family.

The second stage is mental and involves putting the initiates under simulations. It puts the initiates in fearful situations and they are scored on how quickly they can calm themselves down. Since Tris is Divergent, she is able to recognize that she is under the influence of a simulation and doesn't respond to it. At this time her instructor, Four, realizes that she is Divergent and warns her that she had better learn to hide it better if she didn't want to get killed. But because of Tris' Divergence, she can easily calm herself in the simulations and therefore finishes first after that week. A few of her jealous competitors take matters into their own hands, including her friend Al. They attempt to throw her into the chasm (like, white water rafting but without a raft and with death). Four happens upon the scene and saves her. Afterwards, Al begs for Tris' forgiveness but when she shows no sign of wanting to forget what happened to her (SPOILER IN WHITE INK) he commits suicide by throwing himself into the chasm.
The final stage is called a fear landscape. It takes the individuals fears and puts them in the situations. The individuals are aware they are in a simulation and have to fight it by calming their heart rate or facing the fear. As Tris and Four become closer, Four lets her into his fear landscape which has only four fears. An unheard of low. Which, you guessed it, is why he's called Four. After this, Four trusts Tris and tells her his real name -- Tobias. He is the son of the Abnegation leader who ran away.

On fear landscape day, Tris has seven fears to overcome. Crows, drowning in a tank, drowning in the ocean, being  burned by Peter, being kidnapped, having sex with Tobias (really that he only wants her sexually), and being forced to shoot her family. She goes through her landscape quickly and after is injected with a "tracking" serum.

In the middle of the night, Tris is awoken by the sounds of shuffling in the dorm. Everyone is awake and moving around, getting dresses. When she asks what's going on to her friend, Christina, she gets no answer. She is greeted with blank eyes and mechanical movements from everyone. Immediately she senses something is wrong. Quickly, she gets dressed and follows the others trying to match their mechanical movements.

She follows the group onto one of the trains. Here she sees Tobias and slowly makes her way up to him. However, he seems to be under the influence of the serum. Tris internally starts to freak out, but then Tobias grabs her hands. He isn't affected by the serum. Phew!

They get off the train and walk into Abnegation living area where they mechanically begin to round up Abnegation families and execute them without a rhyme or reason. Tris and Tobias keep walking until they are stopped by Eric. Eric is talking with another leader about how the serum works -- it tells them what to do, so they blindly follow orders like puppets. Eric makes fun of how Four (Tobias) was top of the class and now a mindless drone. He then decides no one will miss Four and puts a gun to his head, and that's the final straw for Tris who shoots him in the foot so they can run.

They don't get far before Tris is shot, and Tobias won't leave her. They are taken then to Jeanine Matthews where she orders Tris to be killed and Tobias to be used for further testing. When Tris is taken to her execution, she is put in a glass tank that fills with water. Fitting, since this has been one of her fears. Suddenly, the glass breaks and Tris is held by her mother who is ordering her to run.

As they are escaping, Dauntless discover them and begin firing. They keep running and shooting. Eventually, there are too many Dauntless. Spoilers follow (in white): Tris' mother sacrifices herself so that Tris can go on and reunite with her father and brother, who are in a safe house with some other refugees. Tris is then confronted by Will, one of her friends, and he is being controlled by the serum. Will has his gun pointed and is ready to fire. Tris instinctively shoots and kills him.

When Tris gets to the safehouse, she finds her brother, Marcus, and her father. She develops a plan to get to Dauntless again and stop the simulation and therefore stop all of the killing. When they get to Dauntless, Tris finds Peter who she shoots in the arm and then forces him to help them find their way through the compound. Along the way (spoiler!) Tris' father also sacrifices himself so that she can go on and stop the simulation. When Tris finally gets to the control room, she finds Tobias sitting there. However, it isn't really him. He's under a simulation (a strong one) and he attacks her. They fight all the while Tris is trying to get him to snap out of it and remember who she is, however he seems to hate her. She realizes she can't kill him so she turns her gun onto herself and points it at her head. She looks at him and tells him it's going to be okay and that it's alright. Somehow, this gets into Tobias' head and he is freed from the simulation (THANK GOD).

Together, they figure out a way to shut down the simulation and free all the other Dauntless. They then rejoin with what is left of their group and they get on a train to Amity where Marcus says other Abnegation have been taking refuge.

To find out what happens next, you'll have to read Insurgent.

My thoughts on the book as a whole is that it was amazing. It was a great read. I found myself reaching for the book in all of my spare time. I practically flew through it. I loved everything about this book. I seriously can't think of a thing that wasn't great. Veronica Roth seriously made a great one here guys. I think the tell tale signs of if a book is good or not is if you have a BTM (or several). What's a BTM? It's a Book Throwing Moment. A BTM is when you're so angry or so frustrated with the author or the characters that you just want to throw your book in exasperation. I wanted to do that so many times with Tris. She was seriously an infuriating character!

But I loved her anyway. I loved her spirit. I also liked that she was described as someone not gorgeously beautiful, but properly average. And Tris didn't have a problem with that. She wasn't wallowing in self pity because she wasn't drop dead gorgeous. She accepted herself and even found a hunky dude, Tobias. You go, girl!

I honestly would recommend this book to anyone who liked fiction about dystopian societies. It's definitely not for everyone. It's not a mystery. You can almost guess many of the things that are going to happen, but there are also twists you never would have guessed. Like Al, who would have seen that coming? I didn't. I actually cried at that part I was so mad.

Bonus! Movie thoughts!

Have you guys even seen the movie yet? Like, omg. I seriously cannot even explain the excitement I had over seeing this movie. I was so pumped.
But then I watched it. And I'm not saying it wasn't good, because I did enjoy it, but it was just not the same as reading the book. I really didn't agree with someone the things they left out and how they changed some things. However, I still enjoyed watching it and seeing how they brought the characters and the surroundings to life. That's my favorite part of book-to-films. I like seeing what I imagined and seeing what the director of the movie/author imagined. Honestly, that's the greatest. Especially when what you imagines was SPOT ON with what they did for the film.

Can we just talk about Tobias for a moment?

Hello, gawjuss, where ya been all my life?

But seriously. Wouldn't they make just the perfect couple?

Too cute!

Anyway, if you've seen the movie or read the book, how did you feel about it? Comment below!

The No Selfie Challenge

Recently, while spending a night at home watching New Girl and being incredibly lazy my boyfriend looked at me and told me "Marissa, you are addicted to your phone."

To which I fired back immediately, "No, I'm not."

But here's the thing: over the course of the next couple of days I started to notice something about myself... I could not hold a conversation without looking at my phone. Like, there would be someone physically talking to me and I would be on my phone instead of devoting my full attention to them.

Also, I would be talking to my boyfriend at home and have to pause what I was saying to take an ugly snapchat of myself to send to my best friend, because naturally you must reply to snaps within ten seconds of getting them. And he would get annoyed and I wouldn't understand why, after all it wasn't like I was ignoring him.

But in a way, I was. I was ignoring his physical presence to take a picture of myself and send it to someone who wasn't in the room or in this city.

I was scrolling through my pictures on my phone to delete some and saw more selfies than I care to admit to. just know it was a lot. Now I've always told myself I took these selfies with good intentions, aka sending them to my boyfriend when we were spending the summer apart. However I was also making them my twitpics and Instagramming them #selfie

It had just gotten out of hand. So I told myself no more. I'm tired of living in a world where people can't even go a whole dinner conversation without checking their phones as if there will be someone who so desperately needs your attention right then. I hate that as soon as I get a text, my eyes go to my phone and away from whoever I'm talking to. Does anyone else see how this is totally messed up?

My generation is taking virtual relationships and placing them above physical ones. Don't get me wrong, texting is great, so is Twitter, but, like, talk to people! There is no reason for you to be on your phone the entire time that someone is telling you a story. It makes you pay attention less, seem more distant, and most importantly it makes it look like you don't care.

So how do we fix this? How do we still have meaningful relationships outside of Twitter/Tumblr/Facebook?

My proposal:

The No Selfie Challenge
Honestly, do you NEED to take a picture of yourself in the mirror in the morning? Do you NEED to take an ootd? Why would you post a picture of your outfit on the internet anyway, then you can't wear it again the next day! Yes I know your hair and makeup are rockin today, but do you HAVE to document that?

The No Phones At Dinner Challenge
You've heard of this before, I'm sure. It's the put your phones in the middle-first one to look pays-kinda deal. Except my friends and I are not paying for each other and that is final. But the concept is good. Put your phones away, enjoy each other. If you can't even hold a conversation with your friends over dinner how good of friends are you really?

The Put It Away I'm Literally Right Here Talking To You Challenge
The name says it all. If someone is directly talking to you-I don't care who it is- put your damn phone away and at least pretend to listen. It's so rude to just be staring at your phone the whole time. Would you do that to your boss? I certainly hope not. I know Flappy Bird is like super addicting and you're on a roll but just put it down.

Will you take the challenge with me?

April Update

March is officially over, and like, I don't even know what happened to it.

MARCH WAS THE BEST MONTH EVER! I only had two weeks of school, granted one of them was the worst week I've had in a loooong time, but whatevs it's over now!

St Pats break was awesome. Had a ton of fun and stuff! I mean, where I'm at St Pats is like a big deal and we actually have a mid semester break for it. So that happens.

But Spring Break was awesomer. I got the amazing opportunity to travel to Peru with some classmates to study the geology/geological formations of the mountains and volcanoes, and also we looked at the engineering work of the Incans. It was amazing and honestly, I can't even begin to tell you how life changing it was for me.

Here's a picture of me on top of the sun temple:

It was an amazing trip. I have so many great memories! If you ever get the chance to go abroad, take it! You will not regret it! The only bad thing was not having cell phone signal and not being able to drink the water, but other than that you're fine! And honestly, not having my phone wasn't a big deal. I only missed it because I couldn't tell people at home I was okay.

I finally saw FROZEN! And what an amazing movie that is! I adore it, am obsessed with it, and even bought the soundtrack for it. Disnerd ova hurrr.

In other news, I've been making bows like crazy to prepare for the opening of my Etsy shop. I have to order business cards, shipping supplies, and get some artwork done and that's all that stands in the way of it opening! I'm pretty excited because I'm very proud of the designs I've been making. It's become a really fun hobby for me and an escape from work and school.

Easter is fast approaching and you know what that means... LENT IS OVER AND I CAN EAT CHEESE DIP AGAIN! That's what I gave up this year. It's an addiction for me, buttttt I don't care. Although Lent being over is bitterweet since that means no more AYCE fish fries.

March was a month of laziness in the fitness department. The beginning of the month I was doing great. Over St Pats working out is laughable. In Peru, I hiked alot and walked everywhere and climbed things so I'm counting that as working out. It felt like working out anyway! But also since I've been back from Peru, I've been behind in school (I had to miss classes for flights) and trying so hard to catch up. I don't want to make the excuse that I haven't had time for the gym, because I have (and I've gone a few times -- don't get me wrong), it's just that I have been so dang tired after a day that I just don't want to go. I haven't even cooked myself dinner in the past week, it's been that bad. Starting soon though, I'm forcing myself to get up early and go. This way I have no excuses because what else was I gonna do at that time... sleep? Psh. Plus since I have a 10k this summer I really can't take weeks off at a time.

I've also discovered an amazing new ~alcoholic~ beverage called St. Germain. It's the most amazing tasting thing ever I highly recommend you go buy it right now. Plus I've been in love with Gin and 7 up this month. Perfect combo.

I guess nothing else really interesting is happening in my life right now. :)

Bows Bows Bows

If you know me in any way at all, you'll know I have a slight obsession with hair bows.

Honestly, how can you look at them and not die? They're so cute and fun.

However, when I first fell in love with this trend I couldn't really find them in stores. Now they seem to be in every H&M and F21 (which is awesome, honestly). At first I could only turn to Etsy for my obsession and phew doggy those bad boys can be expensive!

So I made a decision. I could buy these bows for 5-7 bucks a pop (which isn't like, breaking the bank, or anything) plus shipping or I could figure out a way to make them myself.

So what did I do? You guessed it, I started making bows.

At first, they kind of sucked honestly. But then after I scrapped a few of them I figured out a routine that made them look pretty cute in my own humble opinion.

My first ten-ish bows were made of fabric. (I told you I have an obsession, did you think I was kidding?)

Fabric bows, total win as long as you can find cute fabric. Which is 100% doable considering I live right next to a Joann's.

But recently I've been experimenting with putting bows together differently, and this time with ribbon!

I think I'm enjoying the ribbon look better! These bows are all pink because I only bought pink ribbon in case I hated ribbon bows. And since I love pink… Haha. I was actually feeling a princess Aurora vibe when I picked these three ribbons out.

Anyway, what do you think? Do you like the fabric or the ribbon bows better? Honestly, feedback would be amazing!

Both mediums present difficulties when I make them, but the end result is just too cute to not make them!

However, the main reason for this post is to hear your feedback. I'm currently considering opening up an Etsy shop to sell these hand made bows online to a larger audience. There will be more than just pink, don't worry! Actually I'm toying around with the idea of making bows inspired by sororities, colleges, major league sports, and maybe even disney (though there are some amazing boutiques on Etsy that specialize in this already).

So this is where you come in. I need to get a basic idea of some sort of demographic for these bows. If they have an audience willing to buy (and I'm not going to charge an arm and a leg, just materials + labor) then I would have a lot of fun making these and sending them out. I have a creative bug itching to get out and my boyfriend can only handle seeing me in so many bows!

If you think you would be interested in purchasing either fabric or ribbon hair bows for yourself or a loved one, please comment down below or give this a +1 thing. If I have enough interested I will open up an Etsy shop myself and sell them!

Thanks for reading!

March Update

March is halfway over, where has the time even gone? Isn't that crazy though? Tell me I'm not the only person who woke up and thought about how much of 2014 has flown by without me noticing.

I've been so focused on school. And by school, I mean school being out of session so I can go home for summer. Summer is just the best, even though I work the entire summer. I don't mind that either, I just don't get paid enough. That's what college is for, right?

Sadly, since my February update the Midwest has gone through major ups and downs in climate. It has been super nice…. then the next day it has snowed. It's seriously annoying. I just want to dress cute and be warm, although I'm not prepared for shorts weather and the leg shaving yet. Plus I'm rocking a pasty white from winter, though I did get sunburnt over St Pats. (In forty degree weather, no less!)

Also since my February update I've finished How I Met Your Mother, Say Yes to the Dress, Merlin, and Archer on Netflix. It's been awful. I have nothing to watch now.

I'm really itching to see Frozen. It came out on dvd yesterday and I'm seriously considering buying it. Seriously.

That's all she wrote folks. Hopefully I'll have something fun for you all soon!
